Welcome Class of 2020!
As we approach the start of the fall semester, San Diego State University is busy hosting campus tours, new student orientations, and other events. New Student Orientations begins in mid-July and students are able to choose their classes for the fall semester and learn more about their college and their major.
During the summer months the Compact Scholars Program (CSP) also prepares to host the annual Compact Scholars Orientation. This year the CSP Orientation was held on Saturday, July 9th. Over 500 students and family members attended this orientation where they learn about the benefits and services of the CSP.
Faculty and staff of the Division of Undergraduate Studies were present to welcome students to San Diego State University. Keynote speaker and SDSU Alumnus, Jordan Harrison, inspired students to take advantage of the many resources available at SDSU and encouraged them to always give their “one hundred and one percent” in everything they do.
Following the welcome session, students and parents were split up for three workshop sessions. Students were able to choose between ten workshops, such as a student panel, a library tour, a study abroad informative session, among others! Parent sessions included study abroad, financial aid and scholarships, and a student panel.
Students and parents alike took home valuable information about what college life is like, and how to strive at SDSU and be actively involved with the SDSU community to make college an experience that will never be forgotten. Students and families learned about High Impact Practices (HIPs) and how these experiences as complement to traditional academic coursework can help students achieve a more well-rounded college experience that best prepared them for success during and post-college. Incoming first-year student Kiana Malabanan tells us more about why she chose SDSU and how the Compact Scholars Program Orientation benefitted her.
I’ve always heard great things about SDSU, how the classes are great and how the surroundings allow students to succeed. Now that I will be attending this fall, I can’t wait to officially encounter what it’s like to be an Aztec. I’m excited to live on campus, meet new people, be involved, begin working towards my degree, and take on any opportunities SDSU has for me! I felt a bit nervous coming to the Compact Scholars Orientation, but after it was over it allowed me to leave with a lot of useful advice. I learned about leadership, keys to succeed and about majors/careers. All of the speakers’ informative tips allowed me to learn about all the opportunities available to me at State.
Transitioning from high school to college will be a challenge but we are confident that our Compact Scholars will all succeed at San Diego State University. We are excited to welcome over 600 new students into the Compact Scholars family! Congratulations and welcome Class of 2020!
