As we are heading towards a nice relaxing break, I wanted to inform you of being HIP! HIP is an acronym that stands for High Impact Practices. For example, these may consist of studying abroad, internships, undergraduate research, service learning and creative activities. Each of these provides students with new opportunities and improved skill sets that can be used to aid in their career path.

There are many opportunities at SDSU for studying abroad. As a Compact Scholar, you have access to study abroad advising which is located in AD 201F. There are also scholarships offered for students to help fund their study abroad experience. Some of the programs offered for studying abroad can even be specifically for your major. If you would like to make an appointment, you could click on this link.

Service Learning is a way for students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it in various communities. This often involves analyzing and problem solving. It’s a nice way to get a broader understanding of real world settings while being able to reflect on your service experience. If you would like to learn more, you can click here for Service Learning and Community Engagement Programs.

Undergraduate Research is a nice way to gain skill sets and experience within a students major or career related field. A lot of professors conduct research and they recruit undergraduate students to assist. One of the best ways to find out about these opportunities is to ask professors and/or TA’s directly if they know of any research opportunities.

Internships provide students with experience in their career field of interest within a work setting. The main question that you will end up getting when searching for a job within the field that you are studying is “What experience do you have?”. Internships are a great way to obtain that experience that you need for future employment and you never know, you might end up working at the company that gave you the internship! Or you may find out that the career path you thought was for you, isn’t for you at all. One of the best ways for students to search for internships is to go to Career Services here at SDSU. They have workshops that can help you with building resumes, interviews, and so much more! They also hold Career Fairs each semester which is a great way for employers to meet you and for you to ask questions.

I hope you consider incorporating of few of these High Impact Practices into your college experience so you too can BE HIP!

P.S. Be on the lookout for our BE HIP! Expo taking place during the Spring 2020 semester!! In the meantime, you can subscribe to the BE HIP! mailing list at https://lp.constantcontact.com/su/Ybil6lU/BeHIP to learn about various HIP opportunities!
